Some points to consider when it comes to capital punishment…
Tennessee has enacted a new law that, as of July 1, allows the death penalty for child rape convictions. Typically, I bristle at the notion of capital punishment in this day and age. I see how this draconian process is arbitrarily applied in so many countries I have worked in with little due process for the accused, and I struggle to see how it advances societies.
But when it comes to horrific abuse crimes involving children or animals… I pause for thought.
The new Tennessee law allows the death penalty for adults convicted of aggravated rape of a child. It is hoped that this will deter criminals from committing such crimes. However, some argue that it may scare victims from coming forward.
Not surprisingly, this law has sparked debate, with supporters arguing that it is a just punishment for a heinous crime, and opponents arguing that it is cruel and unusual punishment, and may discourage victims from coming forward.
The death penalty remains a controversial issue in the United States. There are many arguments for and against it.
Supporters of the death penalty argue that it is a just punishment for certain crimes, such as murder and child rape. They also argue that it deters criminals from committing such crimes.
Opponents of the death penalty argue that it is cruel and unusual punishment. They also argue that it is not an effective deterrent to crime. Additionally, they argue that there is a risk of executing innocent people.
The death penalty is a complex issue with no easy answers. There are valid arguments on both sides of the debate. Ultimately, it is up to each individual to decide whether or not they support the death penalty.

As the mother of a victim and the ex-wife of the perpetrator, I wish this law had been enacted ten years ago. Today, he is a free man although on the registry for life. I'm proud to live in a state that made a new statement to stand with victims and punish rapists of children.
