Video Out Now... Sudan’s Civil War: Crisis Spilling Over Chad’s Border
The video from my latest trip to Africa, covering the Darfur crisis on behalf of Frontsight Media, is now live. 💔 Witnessing firsthand the heartache and unimaginable challenges that mothers and women face in this region left me with a profound sense of helplessness—but also a renewed determination to amplify their stories. Please take a moment to watch and share…
Some personal thoughts:
Nobody wants to be a refugee, forced to live on land that isn’t theirs, deprived of the self-respect of home and stability. When I cover conflicts around the world, I often hear people lament that the world is silent. In truth, wars get plenty of attention—but attention rarely translates into action. Yet, when it comes to Darfur, I have to agree: the world truly is silent. Media coverage is scarce, and the region barely makes a blip in the wincingly shiny pop news cycle.
In a blink, with the slightest tilt of the Earth, sunlight shifts abruptly to pure darkness. Night falls quickly in Africa because of its proximity to the equator. Near the equator, the sun sets almost vertically relative to the horizon, causing twilight—the transition between day and night—to barely exist.
It feels to me like everything falls so much faster here.
“People here don’t die from natural causes or war wounds,” Dr. Abdelilah tells me softly as we bump and grind away from the edges of Sudan. “They die of heartbreak.”
