Words that Never Leave You: “An eye for an eye will only make the world blind. Stop the revenge.”
Part Twenty-One in an ongoing series from Hollie's book "Words That Never Leave You: Fifty Pearls of Wisdom and Reflection from Survivors Across the World."
The expansive UNHCR Kakuma Refugee Camp lies in northwestern Kenya, sixty miles from the South Sudan border. It has long been considered one of the poorest parts of the country. Making matters worse for those who have fled wars far and wide is that Kakuma is now bursting beyond capacity, with more than 180,000 crammed inside the parched desert encampment.
I moved slowly toward my waiting car, trying to soak in the day’s stories of refugee heartache and horror, yet of ordinary humans fused with a willingness to push through. As I tilted my head toward the dying light, I noticed a faded sign – almost inaudible with rust – but almost.
“An eye for an eye will only make the world blind,” the painted words, drained of color, said. “Stop the revenge.”
