Words that Never Leave You: “However black a cow is, the milk is always white.”
Part Fourteen in an ongoing series from Hollie's book "Words That Never Leave You: Fifty Pearls of Wisdom and Reflection from Survivors Across the World."
Journeying across Afghanistan after the sudden return of the Taliban felt almost as if this patch of the world plunged into the time before time began, carrying the mythic weight of blood, beauty, and so much of the unknown.
“However black a cow is, the milk is always white,” Gul, our local driver, said as we jerked on through the twists and turns of a fractured dirt road set against emerald mountains that seemed to stretch on forever.
Gul’s words were a summation of a Pashtun proverb, meaning that there is so much more that unites us than divides us as humans. No matter where we are or our walk of life, the human species is more alike than we are different, and we have much in common than we think.
