Words that Never Leave You: “My dream is to dream of a future.”
Part Forty-Seven in an ongoing series from Hollie's book "Words That Never Leave You: Fifty Pearls of Wisdom and Reflection from Survivors Across the World."
In the nucleus of a secret dwelling on the periphery of Kabul, I met a small group of girls banished from school, but stubbornly holding each other’s lives in their hands, sharing books and teaching each other whatever they could share. I asked each girl what they want to be when they grow up.
“My dream is to dream of a future,” one thirteen-year-old, Sara, replies quickly.
Her words catch my throat. Plotting a future, setting goals and mapping out our lives in determined increments are little luxuries we in safe and secure spaces take for granted.
