Words That Never Leave You: “With the arts, you can never be lonely.”
Part Thirty-Three in an ongoing series from Hollie's book "Words That Never Leave You: Fifty Pearls of Wisdom and Reflection from Survivors Across the World."
As a small girl, I wanted to roam open plains and run wild through the woods, and yet week after week my mother would gel my untamed mane into bun and force pink tights over my bruised shins for the musty discipline of weekly ballet class. I would cry and scream and beg not to go. Yet worming my way out was never an option.
“With the arts, you can never be lonely,” my angelic mother – herself an only child – sometimes whispered, tucking me beneath a soft quilt that would always burst at the seams and wake me with feathers tickling my nose.
And ever since then, creativity has been something of a friend for life.
