Words that Never Leave You: “Zero F**ks.”
Part Forty-Two in an ongoing series from Hollie's book "Words That Never Leave You: Fifty Pearls of Wisdom and Reflection from Survivors Across the World."
Naweed, my beloved Afghan fixer, boldly confronts the Taliban and other once-storied enemy combatants with enviable confidence. Little seemed to intimidate him, and the boldness and unwavering professionalism of someone still in their twenties intrigued me.
“Zero f**ks,” Naweed responded to my question with a shrug.
While I do think the notion of not caring is not realistic for all facets of life – we should care – the advice of “zero fucks” does come in immaculately when it comes to pushing aside the hate mail and negativity, standing up for myself in uncomfortable business situations, and not straying from my path of determination. “Zero Fucks” has enabled me to weed out the distractions, the jungle of emotions and attachments we place on specific situations, and propel myself through the nerve-wracking, mountain-climbing moments of our lives.
We can drown ourselves in our self-inflicted anxieties and lack of confidence. Thus, adopting the ZF attitude in applicable moments remains one of my most valued tools.
Our “fucks” are limited. So, if worrying and ruminating aren’t serving, we must know when the energy need not apply.
